Evidence of medieval daily life in the Highlands has increased over the past decades due to metal detecting finds and key excavations at Portmahomack, Cromarty and several castles. Pollen and other analyses from excavations are also providing evidence of food and subsistence. Documentary evidence can also add to this picture.
