6.3.5 Formal Burials

It is clear that a long-lived tradition of inhumation existed in South East Scotland spanning the whole of the Iron Age, and potentially merging with the earliest long-cist cemeteries of the post-Roman period. Arguably, this area, particularly East Lothian represents one of the densest distributions of Iron Age burial in the British Isles (Armit and McKenzie 2014). The East Lothian area is host to around 16 single inhumation sites and at least 9 multiple inhumation sites. Again, different forms of burials were used.

6.3.5.1 Slab-built cist burials

6.3.5.2 Dry-stone coursed burials: Single Inhumations

6.3.5.3 Dry-stone coursed burials: Multiple Inhumations
