6.4.6 Material Culture, Craft and Trade Research Questions

  1. Are there regional artefact characteristics or typologies within the region? 
  1. What was the role of decoration and colour in Iron Age societies?
  1. What evidence for movement of materials, objects, ideas, and people do we have?
  1. What was the nature of the relationship between local communities and Rome?
  1. What was the life-cycle of Roman material on Iron Age sites, such as the reuse of pottery and the melting down of objects? 
  1. How can we further utilise the significant site at Traprain Law to develop our understanding of the economic, social and political aspects of the area?
  1. What do we know about hybrid forms of material culture, such as glass bangles and Roman Iron Age/Romano-British metalwork? 
  1. What other economic concerns (beyond being farmers) were there in the Iron Age? For example, competitive display; gift exchange and indebtedness; woodland management, mineral exploitation; metallurgy; regional and extramural trade.
