4.6 Religion and Ritual

Belief, ritual and funerary practices

In the SESARF region, most of our information relating to these topics comes from a small number of sites, and many questions remain about the chronology of several types of site. However, enough information exists to allow comparison between south-east Scotland, other parts of Scotland and the rest of Britain. Since funerary practices are, relatively speaking, the best represented, this section will start with those. In this section, as in the other sections, the evidence will be reviewed in chronological order: Early Neolithic (3800–3500 BC); Middle Neolithic (3500–3000/2900 BC) and Late Neolithic (3000/2900–2500 BC).
