National and International designations

There are 365 designated Scheduled Ancient Monuments across Shetland. Just over 70% of these are on Shetland’s Mainland, with a particular concentration across South and West Mainland which arguably reflects historic research foci within these areas. The island of Unst is also well represented with 43 Scheduled Ancient Monuments, almost 12% of Shetland’s designated sites. Again, this pattern reflects the history of research interests. There are eight designated Properties in Care across Shetland, with a similar distribution to monument scheduling; majority in South and West Mainland, only one outer island site which is in Unst. There are more than 500 Listed Buildings across Shetland, again Mainland dominates, but in comparison with scheduling and Properties in Care, there is a more even distribution across Shetland’s outer islands. There are more than 20,000 sites and monuments records for Shetland.
