Students are the future of archaeological research and by building a relationship with ScARF, we can ensure that future research is relevant and effectively contributes to our understanding of the past.
The aims of the network are:
- to encourage collaboration within the postgraduate community working in Scotland;
- to help students gain experience in presenting their research at conferences and other events;
- to encourage students to share their research through the ScARF website, thus helping keep the framework relevant and up-to-date but also gaining publicity for the students themselves.
The network is still evolving and we are keen to forge relations with university history and archaeology societies – if you would like us to come along to talk to your group about the ScARF project and how your research can actively contribute, get in touch!
Conference-specific bursaries are available for selected ScARF events, however, student bursaries to help with costs to attend events are available all year round. If you would like to attend a conference or workshop which will benefit any aspect of your studies involving Scottish archaeological research or contribute to ScARF let us know!

ScARF also organise free to attend skills workshops, delivered by leading experts. Look out for these by signing up to our e-newsletter and following ScARF on social media!

As part of our commitment to fostering new research, ScARF has a number of bursaries available each year that are designed to help with the costs of attending workshops and conferences.
ECR Research – Case Studies
The newest addition to the Student Network, this section aims to provide a platform for Early Career Researchers to share exciting and innovative research covering all aspects of Scottish archaeology.
Student Reports
ScARF aims to encourage students to attend conferences and take notes on behalf of the ScARF project. These notes will end up here as both a record of the conference itself but also as a way to inform future thinking and research.
Presenting Research Resources
One of the aims of the student network is to help students gain experience in presenting their research at conferences and other events. We know that the idea of presenting your work can be daunting, especially to an audience you are unfamiliar with.
